What are those weird symbols at the protein sequence ends?

These symbols stand for the three termination codons which, in SelenoDB, are considered part of the coding region. The rational behind is that stop codons code for termination of protein elongation (synthesis) through an RNA-protein interaction with a release factor. In particular:

  • TGA is @
  • TAG is %
  • TAA is #
Both nucleotide and protein symbols for termination codons (but not the Sec codon) are shown in blue, which means coding in the annotated sequences.
